New Connections: Find Interesting People With The Top Dating Apps

While some critics like to talk about how smartphones and the Internet contribute to disconnect and alienation in modern society, smartphone technology is also helping to bring people together. The concept of online dating is nothing new but with location-based technology several smartphone apps have started new trends in social and dating activities. Here are some of the top smartphone apps on for users to make new friends or find potential lovers.

One of the first apps for dating and mobile people discovery to emphasize user location, Skout allows users find to other users within a general radius. Don’t worry, the app doesn’t identify a user’s precise location, and users can opt-out of the location-tracking features if they choose. Founded as a mobile web social network in 2007, Skout has grown to over 10 million members. Not only can users meet new people and make friends but they can also exchange pictures.

Thanks to its ease of set-up and use, Tinder has gained a lot of attention and become one of the most popular dating/social apps around. To use Tinder all one needs is a Facebook account. The matchmaking app then uploads the user’s first name and Facebook photos, interests, and age to create a Tinder profile. From there users can anonymously browse potential matches near them (or elsewhere with use of the premium services) and use swiping motions to “like” or reject other users. Tinder was one of the first “swiping apps” to use the swiping method in which users who mutually “like” one another are matched and can begin conversing. Swiping apps have become popular as a quick and easy method to find new friends, dates, or hookups. Tinder registers over one billion swipes per day among its millions of users.

Coffee Meets Bagel
CMB is an app that eliminates the clutter of wading through a ton of profiles to find people of interest. With this app a user is sent a curated match known as a “bagel” every day at noon. Usually this match is someone that shares mutual friends on Facebook and can be liked or passed. If mutual interest is shown between users they will be connected via private chatroom and from there they can get to know each other and plan a potential date. CMB takes out some of the superficiality found in other apps by emphasizing interests and personality.

Considered the most popular data driven dating site, OkCupid allows mobile users to have all the functions of their website in mobile form. OkCupid features quizzes and questions to measure compatibility between users. Multiple modes of communication are supported, including instant messaging.
