Sheldon Lavin’s Long Road

Today, Sheldon Lavin is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of one of the foremost privately owned food service companies in the world. To say that he is a titan of the industry is an understatement, as even at the 81, Mr. Lavin’s presence within the world of meat and food services continues to grow, as he consistently breaks new ground. Mr. Lavin currently sits atop the meat services industry, but it wasn’t until 1970 that he began his initial foray. Prior to 1970, Mr. Lavin had been a very successful banking executive and investor and even headed his own financial consulting firm. Mr. Lavin was no stranger to success, but he was new to the meat services industry, entering it due to his extensive background in investing and financial advising. In 1970, Mr. Lavin was asked to help find funding for the meat processing company, Otto and Son’s. During this deal, he was asked by the bank to come aboard as a partner. Although he initially declined, he did agree to stay on as a consultant but included a caveat that would allow him to take full advantage of the deal at a later date if he ever became interested. By the mid-1970’s, after becoming heavily involved in the daily overseas operations of Otto and Son’s, a position became available, and Mr. Lavin took advantage of the company’s original offer. By the 1980’s, Otto and Son’s had been rebranded, OSI Group, and under Mr. Lavin’s leadership, began expanding rapidly into new territories, including Australia, South Africa, the Philippines, and other parts of Europe and Asia. Today, OSI Group has over 60 locations globally and employs over 20,000 people, many of which have been longterm employees of the company. Many people attribute the company’s continued growth and success to Mr. Lavin’s consistent forward-thinking, as well as the family-oriented environment that continues to champion throughout his company.

Today Mr. Lavin is 81 years old and continues to be very active in the daily operations of his company. Mr. Lavin continues to garner a reputation as an innovative businessman, as well as a very charitable contributor. Of the various charities that Mr. Lavin consistently contributes, one of the more well-known is Ronald McDonald House. He has also received a myriad of awards for his work within the industry, and 2016, Mr. Lavin was recognized by the Vision World Academy of India and presented with its Global Visionary Award.
