OSI Industries Raises Food Safety Priority

OSI Industries has a large demand to meet as one of the key suppliers of McDonalds, Subway and several other fast food companies. They’ve not only managed to keep up with the speed demands of production, but also have implemented some of the strictest safety measures minimizing employee injuries with sharp tools. But most importantly, the processing equipment they utilize at their plants is rated green-friendly and has made them a top-recognized environmentally-friendly meat company. OSI Industries received the Globe of Honour award from the British Safety Council in 2016 for maintaining safety in all of its UK facilities over the years.

OSI Industries specializes in many packaged meats including breakfast specials, prepared sandwiches, pizzas and poultry. It was originally a family-owned butcher shop founded back in 1909 by Otto Kolschowsky in south Chicago. In time, the butcher shop grew into a large multi-factory wholesale group, and by 1957 McDonalds had chosen them to become its largest meat supplying partner. The company was now known as Otto & Sons and was doing quite well with quality products, but they still needed someone who could mange the company finances and maximize investments. So that’s when longtime banker Sheldon Lavin came on first as a consultant, but eventually as CEO and soon took over most of the ownership stakes. By 1975, the company had been renamed to OSI Industries, and three years later the first investments had been made in the German markets.

OSI Industries has grown into a net worth of over $1 billion, but they’ve made it their mission to put people above profits at each step of the way. Each company they’ve bought out, including recent acquisitions of Baho Food and a Tyson Foods plant has had OSI Group’s offers to all employees to retain their jobs, and even some companies have had their brand names retained. The culture at OSI Group is one of listening to all employee concerns and suggestions, and Lavin and company President David McDonald have mentioned that employees often stay at OSI Group for the long-term. OSI Industries also has made philanthropy a huge part of their routine, and the non-profit they support the most is the Ronald McDonald House Charities.
